So Hard to Say Goodbye!

20180307_111206
Yesterday was a mere most-of-the-morning gathering of students, giving the last round of hits and helps, open discussion on things such as batting choices, binding choices, and off-the-top-of-our-heads winding up and winding down.

Some had flights to catch.

Some had 7 to 8 hour drives ahead, looking forward to being in their own beds by bed time.

Some were driving part-way home to stay with family or friends finishing up the rest of their long journeys, greatly (and gratefully) divided with a soft place to land for the night.

Some of us – Me, Sue Spargo, Jane Sassaman and a handful of others were left to stay one more night with shuttles and flights to catch early this morning.

This is sweet Erleen!  I have loved having her in class.  She has such a sharp wit and a wonderful smile and at 82 years young she just kept plugging away at our project -

And her blocks are wonderful!

We all agreed we hoped that we were all still quilting away at 82.  And there was talk of seeing her again when I come back in 2020!

An Afternoon with Marie from Minnesota – and the John Denver Memorial.

20180307_124813

John crashed his plane in the bay here in 1997.

I loved John Denver from the time I was a pre-teen and my dad would play the guitar and we would sing John’s songs together.  I grew up with his music.  I’m glad we took just a small moment to pay our respects, Marie and I – you are missed, John!

Monterey Aquarium!

We were gifted a couple of free passes by Nancy, and were so happy to spend a couple of hours just enjoying the amazing beauty our oceans hold.

“Just keep swimming, just keep swimming!”

I made a little video of the highlights of our visit.  Click to play:

I could watch the Jellies for hours.  The penguins, as well. So funny!  The otters were nowhere to be seen, but we’ll catch them next time.

Bye, guys!

Sunset from my balcony.

There are words, lots of words left to be written.  I have photos, and feelings, so much to share, but it will have to wait until I get home.  Shuttle is arriving in 30 minutes, my hair is still wet from the shower, I have to finish packing, and I need to grab a to-go breakfast from the little coffee bar in the lodge for my 2 hour drive back to San Jose.

San Jose to Atlanta to Greensboro, I’ll also be home by bedtime.

And did you notice that I didn’t find the time to draw for our Quilty-Box winner yet?  That will happen from home tomorrow morning as I re-group!

  2. OMG! You saw the John Denver Memorial! I love John, too! My whole teenagerhood was filled with his music. I remember being mad at him for leaving because I figured I grow old with him. My kids always kidded me about only playing his music. But it warms my heart when they, at 30 and 35, quote his words to me. I'm waiting to sing his songs to my grandbabies! And I will be glad when you are back in the eastern time zone! The first thing I do when I get to work, is pull up your blog. It starts my day!! You've been late posting these last few days and I have noticed!!!! lol Looked and sounded like a wonderful retreat. Thanks for sharing your adventures. Lisa T

    1. Lisa...
My son in laws father taught my oldest granddaughter Wild Montana Skies, and I taught my little grandson that song too. So fun to watch them sing it! A two year old belting out John Denver never gets old!

  3. Attending a retreat like this would be wonderful. 2020? Where can we sign up for this?

  4. Loved John Denver music, being a Colorado girl made it extra sad, to me anyway, when he died. I remember taping (on VHS) and watching his funeral after work, as it was our local stations out of Denver.
On a lighter note, I think because it is my birthday, I should just get the Quilty-box!(LOL)

  5. John Denver was a fav through generations of my family. My daughter held a candlelight vigil in our living room when he died, with the music playing LOUDLY! My brother and I used to perform his songs together. Even my parents had attended one of his concerts.

  8. I LOVE the Monterey Aquarium. Been there a couple times and if you love John Denver, you need to go to Aspen where his once wife, Anne, made a park for him with the words to many of his songs engraved on large rocks aroung the river that flows though it.

  9. So when you said you gave out hits and helps instead of hints and helps, was that a Freudian slip? Lol!
